Universal Design

Universal Design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people to the greatest extent possible. The goal of home modification for existing homes is not to entirely redesign the home but to make a range of changes or updates that result in your home being a more comfortable and safer place to live. Universal Design home modifications result in a home that you can remain in as you age.

Examples of Universal Design Projects include barrier free showers, walk-in tubs, raised toilets, roll under sinks, grab bars, hand held showers, lever faucets, tilt mirrors, enhanced lighting, lever door knobs, ramps, wider doorways, railings, guard rails, removal of steps, automatic doors, stair lifts, ceiling lifts, elevators/telecabs and more.

Whole House Update
Cincinnati, OH

This project was recently completed, by the KBC Home Modification Division, for a veteran with ALS and was funded thru the VA. We worked with the veteran and his wife to create a large rear composite deck that is wheelchair accessible from the home. This includes a new door with ADA sill installed to replace the existing window from the bedroom to the maintenance resistant, composite deck with aluminum railing and a concrete ramp and sidewalk to the front of the home. The existing master bedroom suite was redesigned to accommodate current and future needs. The existing master bathroom was expanded to include the existing master walk-in closet and make modifications to now include a barrier free shower, an ADA toilet and a roll under vanity sink with enough room to maneuver a wheelchair. The bathroom floor is ceramic tile that goes directly into the shower to create a barrier free shower for easy access with a shower chair. The shower walls are cultured marble for easy cleaning. We have installed grab bars in the shower and at the toilet to provide needed support for the veteran and his caregiver.
